Known as the SOP, our office helps undergraduate students prepare successful applications for prestigious merit scholarships — such as the Rhodes and Fulbright — that are international, national, and regional in scope. These are funded by outside agencies, not UCI.

CLICK HERE for Pre-Application for Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, Churchill, Mitchell, and Gates Scholarships!

The most internationally prestigious awards, they fund a graduate or second bachelor’s degree at the world’s top universities. Winners study at Oxford (Rhodes), Cambridge (Gates and Churchill), anywhere in the UK (Marshall), throughout Ireland (Mitchell), or in any of 140 countries on 6 continents (Fulbright).

If you’re a member of the class of 2009 – or will graduate in 2008 and won't begin graduate school this year – consider applying. You could be a strong candidate if you have a GPA of 3.7 or higher (3.5+ for Fulbright), a record of well-rounded academic achievement, leadership and community service and can create a strong research or study proposal.

These scholarships require UCI endorsement. Our office runs the campus-level operation of evaluating and endorsing applications. To begin the campus process, complete a Pre-Application electronically by 4 p.m. MAY 1, 2008.

There is no limit on the number of applications UCI may endorse. We encourage all talented students with well-defined study or research plans to apply. SOP staff will guide you throughout the process, the bulk of which occurs in the spring and summer.

UCI students have won all of these scholarships except for the Rhodes, in which we have had several finalists.

UPCOMING SCHOLARSHIPS:

MAXIMIZE YOUR POTENTIAL

Spring Quarter Scholarships Class

Enroll in University Studies 40, a 2-unit P/NP class, for an invaluable head start in developing the skills necessary to win Prestigious Scholarships. This seminar (course #87668) involves no grades and won't affect your maximum units. It meets from 3-4:50 on Wednesdays.

Prime candidates for the class are sophomores, juniors, and seniors with GPAs of 3.6 or above. You'll learn how to apply for 34 undergraduate and graduate scholarships. Students will refine their CVS, craft a compelling personal statement, perfect mock interview techniques, and complete a scholarship application.

HOW THE SOP HELPS YOU:

☆☆☆ Merit Scholarship Info ☆☆☆

TOP FACTS:
  1. Prestigious scholarships emphasize excellence in academic, leadership, or community service realms. Although some may incorporate a financial need component, it is not the primary selection criterion.

  2. They fund future research and academic or career endeavors rather than immediate monetary assistance.

  3. Applications often require a thorough statement of proposed study or research, a personal statement, and several letters of recommendation from faculty.

  4. Developing a strong application involves weeks — sometimes months — of planning and drafts. Begin the process early!
Funding agencies generally ask for:

  • Official transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty
  • A project proposal or plan of study
  • A personal statement
Some scholarships may also require:

  • An interview
  • Additional letters of recommendation
  • Attaining institutional endorsement of your application
You can find out about scholarships sponsored by UCI and the UC system by contacting the Office of Financial Aid at (949) 824-8262 or finaid@uci.edu).
