Known as the SOP, our office helps undergraduate students prepare successful applications for prestigious merit scholarships — such as the Rhodes and Fulbright — that are international, national, and regional in scope. These are funded by outside agencies, not UCI.

Apply To Be SOP's Next Intern!

Applications are now available to be the Scholarship Opportunity Program's next intern! The SOP internship is a paid position requiring 10 hours of work each week beginning spring quarter. You must also be available to begin training starting week 8 of winter quarter and be available during the summer.

The SOP intern advises scholarship candidates; organizes, promotes, and speaks at workshops; produces publicity materials; and updates and organizes scholarship information. The job includes administrative duties. This position requires attention to detail, management of multiple projects and deadlines, creativity, initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in an office setting.

You can access the application online. Please e-mail completed applications to Rebecca Harris at rharris@uci.edu by February 1!

Drop-In Office Hours With the SOP Intern for Winter Quarter

If you have any questions about our scholarships, feel free to drop by during Michelle's office hours! Please bring a copy of your resume/CV if you have one. You can also set up an appointment with Michelle by e-mailing sklrship@uci.edu if you aren't available during these times.

Tuesday: 12:30-2:00
Wednesday: 11:00-1:00

Juniors: Strauss Public Service Scholarship

Want to make the world a better place? Check out the Donald A. Strauss Public Service Scholarship, which awards $10,000 to implement a senior year service project.

Candidates may be in their third or fourth year, intend to graduate between June and December 2011, have a great project idea and demonstrate a commitment to public and community service.

The Strauss Foundation website contains application instructions and examples of past winning proposals. Complete applications -- project proposal, application summary, signed acceptance agreement, official college transcript(s), and 2-3 letters of recommendation -- are due Jan. 27 in the SOP office, as they require university endorsement.

Udall Scholarship

Attention, all sophomores, juniors, and non-graduating seniors: Are you interested in an environmental career? Or are you a Native American or Alaskan Native planning a career in healthcare or tribal public policy?

If you fit one of the above categories and are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, the Morris K. Udall Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship is designed for you! It funds $5,000 toward tuition, fees, books, and room and board for the 2012-13 academic year.

Application forms and instructions are available here. Applications for optional review are due to the SOP office on Jan. 9. Completed materials -- application, essay, official transcript(s), and 3 letters of recommendation -- are due Feb. 1 in the SOP office, as they require university endorsement. For more information email sklrship@uci.edu.

HOW THE SOP HELPS YOU:

☆☆ Merit Scholarship Info ☆☆

TOP FACTS:
  1. Prestigious scholarships emphasize excellence in academic, leadership, or community service realms. Although some may incorporate a financial need component, it is not the primary selection criterion.

  2. They fund future research and academic or career endeavors rather than immediate monetary assistance.

  3. Applications often require a thorough statement of proposed study or research, a personal statement, and several letters of recommendation from faculty.

  4. Developing a strong application involves weeks — sometimes months — of planning and drafts. Begin the process early!

Funding agencies generally ask for:
  • Official transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation from faculty
  • A project proposal or plan of study
  • A personal statement

Some scholarships may also require:
  • An interview
  • Additional letters of recommendation
  • Attaining institutional endorsement of your application

You can find out about scholarships sponsored by UCI and the UC system by contacting the Office of Financial Aid at (949) 824-8262 or finaid@uci.edu.

Advising Appointments

We are eager to meet with you and help you navigate the application process for prestigious scholarships! Please follow these steps to schedule an appointment with an SOP advisor:
  1. Review Prestigious Scholarships, listed by application deadline. Click on links for details regarding eligibility and the selection process. Note scholarships for which you qualify based on class standing, subject area, etc.

  2. Email the following materials to SOP staff:

  • Completed Prospective Scholarship Winner Information Form

  • An updated CV (extended resume) - Find tips for creating one here.

  • A current Unofficial Transcript.

  • An informal Statement of Purpose and Goals - Write 300 words or less describing your academic and career goals and how you plan to achieve them.

Once we have received these materials we will get in touch with you to schedule an appointment.
