JoAnne Villagrana received an Honorable Mention for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. JoAnne is a graduating senior in Biological Sciences. As a Minority Science Programs participant, she gained invaluable research experience on the acquisition and evolution of antibiotic resistant bacteria collected from the natural environment. She earned presentation awards at three national conferences and participated in a summer research opportunity at Dartmouth College to understand adaptive antibiotic resistance in cystic fibrosis patients with chronic lung infections caused by the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This Fall, JoAnne will continue research, mentoring, and diversity outreach at Yale University in the PhD Program in Molecular Cellular Genetics and Developmental Biology.
