Steven Gong – Truman Finalist

From San Francisco’s Chinatown District, Steven is a 1.5-generation triple major in human biology, economics, and political science. As the eldest son of Chinese-immigrant nurses, his family’s health and financial struggles motivated him to found the California Health Advocacy Network as a Strauss Scholar—raising $27,000 for health policy and community insurance coverage efforts. A lifelong student leader, Steven has served as a student government at-large senator, organizing director, and inaugural chair of the COVID-19 Response Committee. He now serves 280,000 students statewide as the elected Chief Financial Officer of the University of California Student Association. Steven also conducts research on immigrant health disparities and stroke mechanisms alongside clinical work within medical-surgical, emergency, and ICU departments. Having interned with the US Department of Health and Human Services, the US Department of Justice, and COPE Health Solutions, he intends to earn an MD/MPP and serve as a physician-policymaker—pursuing a vision of healthcare as not a privilege, but a human right
