An Nguyen – Fulbright Alternate

An Thien Nguyen is a fourth-year undergraduate studying Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. Throughout her undergraduate career, An has served as a Scholarship Opportunities Program Student Advisor and Ambassador, mentored incoming first-generation college students, taught over 100 high school students about globalization and international affairs, conducted 3 research projects, and involved in UCI’s Model United Nations Program. In her final year, An is studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. There, An interns with the United Nations House Scotland where she will work on the Sustainable Development Goals and engaging the broader community and youth. Building on her previous research projects, An will pursue a local-level study on U.K. and Scottish anti-trafficking prevention strategies in aiding Vietnamese nationals in their political, legal, social, and economic liberation into broader society. Most notably, An has received the Fund for Education Abroad, Gilman Scholarship, and Promise Awards to support her time studying abroad. In the future, An will pursue a Ph.D. in Sociology to further the field of return migration and transnational immigration experiences of Southeast Asians. An intends to enter academia to produce resources, designate institutional spaces, and create leadership development opportunities for graduate students and faculty of color.
